Keyboard switches are the mechanical components located underneath each key on a mechanical keyboard that register key presses. Switches determine several important factors of a keyboard’s typing experience, including:
Feel: The tactile sensation, force required, and sound produced with each key press.
Response: How quickly a switch registers a key press and the distance required to actuate the key.
Durability: The lifespan of a switch and its resistance to debris accumulation.
There are several main types of switches that offer varying feels and experiences:
Linear switches have a consistent smooth stroke without any bump. They are quiet and fast-acting, suited for gaming. Common linear switches include MX Red, Black, and Silver.
Tactile switches have a subtle bump halfway down to provide feedback but no audible click. They offer accuracy and control. Popular tactiles are MX Brown, Clear, and Blue/Green.
Clicky switches have a distinct tactile bump and audible click for clear feedback. They are best for typing but can be loud. Common clicky switches are MX Blue, Green, and White.
Other switch types include low-profile, optical, and novel designs from manufacturers like Kailh, Gateron, and Outemu. Proper switch selection is important for optimizing typing comfort and performance on a mechanical keyboard.
